1. Update Your ID: REAL ID Deadline Is May 7, 2025

Starting May 7, 2025, all travelers flying within the United States will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights. This federally mandated ID has a star on the top of the card and meets enhanced security standards.

What to do:

  • Check if your current ID has a star. If not, visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to apply for a REAL ID.
  • Bring required documents, such as proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency. Check your state DMV’s website for specific requirements.

Why this matters: Having a REAL ID helps you avoid being turned away at the airport and ensure seamless domestic travel after the deadline.

2. Renew Your Passport: Do This ASAP

Did you know your passport needs at least 6 months of validity to be considered “valid” for entry to most countries? If you’re planning to travel abroad in 2025, now’s the time to check your passport’s expiration date! The good news? Passport processing times are faster than ever – and many people can even renew online.

What to do:

  • Check your passport’s expiration date. Many countries require it to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
  • If it’s expiring soon, apply for a renewal immediately. Renew online for quicker processing, as routine processing can take anywhere from 8-12 weeks, while expedited services take about 4-6 weeks.

3. Apply for ETIAS Before Booking European Travel

Beginning in 2025, U.S. citizens traveling to many European countries will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization. ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new electronic system designed to enhance border security. While the application typically takes just ten minutes, it’s best to apply early – before making any arrangements – in case additional information is required for approval!

What to do:

  • Visit the official ETIAS website to apply for your travel authorization.
  • Have your passport, a valid email address, and payment method ready. The application fee is €7 (about $8).
  • Apply at least 72 hours before your trip, but it’s best to secure this authorization as soon as your travel plans are confirmed.

Why this matters: Without an approved ETIAS, you won’t be able to board flights to participating European countries.

4. Prepare for the Unexpected with Travel Insurance and Research

Traveling to new destinations comes with surprises, but preparation can help you stay ahead of potential challenges.

What to do:

  • Purchase travel insurance that covers trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and unexpected delays. Ensure your policy includes coverage for specific activities you plan to do, like skiing or scuba diving.
  • Check your destination’s travel advisory level on the U.S. State Department website. Take note of any regional warnings, political unrest, or health concerns.
  • Review weather trends for your travel dates and pack accordingly. Stay informed about any seasonal risks, like hurricanes, typhoons, or extreme heat.

Why this matters: Proactive research and preparation can help you avoid disruptions and ensure your trip is both safe and enjoyable.

5. Currency and Payment Prep

Foreign travel often requires currency exchanges or specific payment methods.

What to do:

  • Notify your bank and credit card companies about your travel dates to avoid payment interruptions.
  • Research currency exchange rates and plan to carry some local cash for small transactions.
  • Consider using travel-friendly credit cards with no foreign transaction fees.

6. Packing Essentials

Efficient packing ensures a stress-free trip.
