There are cities you enjoy visiting.
And then there are cities you immediately start planning a return trip to before you’ve even left.
For me, Charleston is firmly in the second category.
I’ve been fortunate enough to visit some incredible places around the world, from seaside villages in Italy to luxury hotels overlooking Icelandic landscapes. But Charleston continues to earn a spot on my list of favorite destinations because it does something few places can: it feels both timeless and exciting at the same time.
Something shifts the moment you arrive.
Maybe it’s the historic homes lining the streets.
Maybe it’s the Spanish moss swaying overhead.
Maybe it’s the fact that every corner seems to reveal another restaurant, boutique, or hidden
garden worth exploring.
Whatever it is, Charleston has a way of slowing you down—in the very best way.
As someone who grew up in the South, I’ll say it plainly: Charleston does Southern hospitality better than almost anywhere else I know.
And if you’re looking for a destination that’s easy to reach, rich with history, and perfect for a long weekend, I’d put Charleston near the top of your list.
One of the things I love most about Charleston is that it works for so many different types of travelers.
I’ve recommended it to couples celebrating anniversaries.
I’ve suggested it for girls’ weekends.
I’ve built itineraries around food, history, shopping, and simply slowing down.
And every time, it delivers.
Charleston is one of those rare destinations where you can spend an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing except wandering and somehow it still feels like the perfect day.
The city invites you to linger. To sit a little longer over lunch. To take the scenic route. To wander down a side street simply because it looks interesting.
And in a world that constantly asks us to move faster, that’s part of its magic.
Whenever I’m planning a Charleston itinerary, I encourage clients not to overschedule their first evening.
Charleston is best experienced gradually.
Check into your hotel, unpack, and take your time getting acquainted with the city. Walk through the lobby. Find the rooftop bar.
Stroll a few blocks and let yourself absorb the atmosphere.
For dinner, I’d send you straight to 167 Raw. The oysters are fantastic. The crudo is worth ordering. And the energy feels distinctly
Charleston—casual, polished, and effortlessly cool.
After dinner, take a slow walk back through the historic streets along East Bay. Gas lanterns glowing. Church steeples in the distance.
Saturday is when I like to lean into what Charleston does so well.
Start the day with a private walking tour or horse-drawn carriage tour through the Historic District.
Yes, it’s popular.
And yes, it’s absolutely worth doing.
A great guide transforms Charleston from a beautiful city into a fascinating one.
You’ll learn about the homes, gardens, architecture, and generations of stories that shaped the city into what it is today.
Afterward, spend the afternoon exploring King Street.
This is one of my favorite parts of Charleston.
Boutiques.
Home stores.
Local designers.
Coffee shops tucked between historic buildings.
You could easily spend hours here.
And honestly? You probably should.
For dinner, Husk remains one of my favorite recommendations.
It’s a Charleston institution for a reason, showcasing Southern ingredients in a way that feels elevated without losing its roots.
If you’ve worked with me before, you know I firmly believe food tells the story of a destination.
That’s why I always recommend a food tour when visiting Charleston.
A Historic District food tour is one of the best ways to experience the city.
You’ll sample some of Charleston’s most iconic dishes while learning about the history and traditions behind Lowcountry cuisine.
It’s part meal, part history lesson, and one of my favorite ways to spend a Sunday morning.
Afterward, head to Sullivan’s Island. The pace is slower. The beaches are beautiful.
And it’s the perfect contrast to the historic energy of downtown Charleston.
Spend the afternoon by the water before heading home the next day.
A great hotel can completely change the feel of a trip, and Charleston has some excellent options.
If I had to describe The Dewberry in one phrase, it would be Southern sophistication. The design is stunning, the service is exceptional, and it feels distinctly Charleston without being overly traditional. It’s one of my favorite recommendations for couples and design lovers.
Hotel Bennett delivers classic luxury in a way that feels grand but welcoming. The location on Marion Square makes it easy to explore the city, and the property itself feels like an experience.
An iconic Charleston landmark for good reason. The recent updates have brought fresh energy to a property that has long been considered one of the city’s premier luxury hotels. The location is hard to beat, especially for first-time visitors
Not every trip needs two weeks. Not every destination requires a passport. Sometimes all you need is a few days somewhere beautiful. A place with great food. Interesting history. Walkable streets. Thoughtful hotels.
And enough charm to make you start planning your next visit before you’ve even left. That’s Charleston.
And every time I send clients there, they come home saying the same thing:
“We should have stayed longer.”
Whether you’re looking for a quick couples’ escape, a girls’ weekend, or simply a chance to slow down and recharge, Charleston is one of my favorite destinations to recommend.
And the best part?
It’s one of the easiest luxury trips to say yes to.
