Croatia Travel Guide: An Overview of all that Croatia has to offer

Croatia Travel

Croatia is a country that lingers in your memory long after you’ve left. It’s a place where ancient history meets pristine natural beauty, where charming villages blend seamlessly with modern luxury, and where every turn offers something new to discover. Recently, I had the privilege of spending 12 days exploring Croatia on a familiarization trip with one of my tour partners, the Calvados Club. What I experienced on this trip was nothing short of amazing, and I’m so excited to share the highlights with you.

The Journey Begins: Venice to Istria

Since my trip started in the northern part of the country, I flew into Venice Italy, where I met my private driver who transferred me to Istria. This drive was around 2 hours and gave me a scenic tour of the northern region which is often compared to Tuscany but with its own unique, off-the-beaten-path allure. Istria feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, with rolling vineyards, quaint villages, and incredible food and wine.

One of the highlights of my time in Istria was truffle hunting—an unforgettable experience that brings you face-to-face with the region’s culinary heritage. Pair that with generous tastings of Istrian wines, and you have a recipe for an unforgettable few days. Whether you’re a couple seeking a romantic getaway, a group of friends, or a solo traveler, Istria offers something special for everyone.

Meneghetti: Wine Hotel & Winery

Meneghetti is a symbol of luxury, an oasis of peace and quiet surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, with its winery, an outstanding restaurant providing highly personalized service, and premium, world-renowned and award-winning wines and olive oils. It welcomes anyone seeking peace, quiet and high-end service.

The Natural Wonders of Plitvice Lakes National Park

From Istria, the journey continued to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes. Walking through this park feels like stepping into a fairytale. Each trail allowed me to be immersed in the beauty of my surroundings with the water flowing in shades of turquoise and emerald.

But Plitvice is more than just scenic—it’s steeped in history. Its waters have been a witness to centuries of change, and the local guides are passionate about sharing the stories of this iconic landscape. It’s a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the tranquility and history of the natural world.

Split: A City of History and Charm

Next, I arrived in Split, a city where ancient history meets modern vibrancy. The heart of Split is Diocletian’s Palace, a stunning remnant of the Roman Empire built by Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century. Walking through its narrow streets, you can’t help but feel the weight of history as centuries-old stone blends seamlessly with lively cafes and shops.

What makes Split truly special is its balance. It’s a bustling city, yet it feels remarkably walkable, not overwhelming, yet inviting and safe. Whether you’re exploring the waterfront promenade (which is the place to see and be seen for your Saturday morning coffee), learning about Roman architecture, or simply enjoying a leisurely glass of wine, everything is within reach.

Hvar Island: Serenity on the Adriatic

Did you know that there are over 1,200 islands in Croatia?

A short boat ride from Split brought me to Hvar Island, a destination synonymous with relaxation and understated luxury. The Adriatic waters are as refreshing as they are picturesque, offering the perfect setting for a day on the water. Taking a private boat is a must if you’re planing to visit the islands so you can enjoy your time on the water, stop for a swim, or just enjoy the stunning views.

During my stay in Hvar, I was fortunate to experience the Maslina Resort,  a sanctuary of calm and wellness. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and truly reconnect with your surroundings, this is the place to be. From spa treatments to quiet moments overlooking the sea, Maslina is the definition of tranquil luxury.

One of my favorite memories on Hvar was exploring Starigrad, the island’s oldest town, and enjoying a private lunch at a lookout point offering panoramic views of the island. It was a reminder of Hvar’s timeless beauty and why it continues to captivate travelers from around the world.

No trip to Croatia would be complete without visiting Dubrovnik, often called the Pearl of the Adriatic. Enclosed by its iconic medieval walls, Dubrovnik feels like a living museum. Its history is palpable, from its role as a thriving maritime republic to its more recent fame as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

Exploring the city’s narrow streets and learning about its past was a highlight of my trip. Dubrovnik’s charm lies in its ability to blend the old with the new, creating a destination that feels truly one-of-a-kind.

Montenegro: Where Luxury Meets the Sea

My journey ended in Montenegro, a country that dazzles with its dramatic landscapes and luxurious accommodations. After sailing through Boka Bay and visiting our Lady of the Rock, I have such a new appreciation for this underrated destination that should be on everyone’s to-visit list.
