France Travel for First Timers: What to Expect, Eat, and Avoid

If you’re considering a first trip to France, you’re in good company. It’s one of my favorite destinations to design for. France travel for first timers can feel both thrilling and slightly overwhelming. This guide is designed to help you arrive prepared, grounded, and ready to enjoy the best of what this romantic, layered country has to offer.

What to Expect in France

France moves at its own pace, and that’s part of its charm. You’ll find the rhythm of life here slower than in the U.S., especially outside of Paris. Long lunches are a norm, boutique shops often close mid-afternoon, and conversation is an art form. A few things to anticipate:

  • Language matters. While many in the hospitality industry speak English, a warm “Bonjour” and “Merci” go a long way.
  • Service is unhurried. Dining is an experience, not a transaction. Don’t expect your check until you ask for it.
  • Cash still has a place. While cards are widely accepted, some bakeries, cafes, and markets are cash-preferred.
  • Transportation is efficient. High-speed trains make getting between cities simple. In Paris, the Metro is your friend.

What to Eat in France

This is the part most of my clients daydream about, and with good reason. French cuisine is deeply regional, so what you eat in Provence will look very different from a meal in Brittany or Alsace. If it’s your first time, here are a few essentials:

  • In Paris: Order a jambon-beurre from a bakery, dine at a traditional bistro, and save room for a warm crêpe from a street vendor.
  • In Provence: Look for bouillabaisse, ratatouille, and rosé served with a view.
  • Daily rituals: Visit markets, try something you can’t pronounce, and follow the locals to their favorite lunch spots.

What Not to Do in France

Cultural missteps are part of travel, but a little insight can save you from standing out for the wrong reasons.

  • Don’t skip the greetings. Entering a shop or restaurant without saying “Bonjour” can come off as rude.
  • Don’t over-schedule. Build in time to linger. France rewards the slow traveler.
  • Don’t assume everyone speaks English. Learn a few basics. It shows respect.
  • Don’t wear athleisure. Even casual French style leans tailored. Think sleek sneakers, dark jeans, and a blazer over leggings and hoodies.

Packing + Paris Trip Outfits

First-time visitors often ask me what to wear in Paris to feel both comfortable and polished. I suggest leaning into neutrals, layering options, and smart accessories:

  • Comfortable but chic walking shoes
  • Neutral-toned scarf (great for changing temps and instant style)
  • A structured coat or blazer
  • Simple dresses or dark jeans for dinners out

Planning Your First France Trip

Whether you’re craving museums and patisseries in Paris, lavender fields in Provence, or sailing on the Riviera, my best advice is this: let someone else handle the logistics. A well-designed itinerary is the difference between exhausted and enchanted.

I design France itineraries that balance must-see sights with quiet moments, local flavor, and luxurious comfort.
