Paradise Found: Your Ultimate Guide to French Polynesia

French Polynesia Travel Guide

Chances are, this collection of islands in the French Polynesia is either on your bucket list, set as your computer’s desktop wallpaper, or both!

And since landing on Condé Nast’s Top Islands list for 2024, it’s the perfect time to highlight a few of the most well-known gems from this island chain (and the perfect time to book them too 😉).

French Polynesia is technically an “overseas collectivity of France,” but a better description
would be:

A dreamy, unreal collection of islands known for their brilliantly clear lagoons, dramatic, towering
mountains, overwater bungalows, and friendly locals.

It might seem like French Polynesia and her islands are far away, but they’re only a mere 8 hours from Los Angeles—just enough time to have a meal, watch a movie, and catch a nap before you’re touching down in Papeete! 🏖

French Polynesia has 118 islands spread over five archipelagos, each with its own unique
landscape, personality, and more!

THE TIMELINE | WHEN TO PLAN & VISIT

If you’re wondering when to visit…

As a year-round destination, there’s no “bad” time to be island-bound, but there are a few key points to keep in mind!

🌞 Dry Season: The best time to visit is during the “dry season,” which falls between May and October. You can expect little to no rainfall, clear blue skies, and comfortable temps for the tropics!

🐋 Whale Season: Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of French Polynesia to give birth to their young. Seeing these majestic creatures up close is a highlight of visiting, so plan for a September or October trip if this is on your list!

🚫 Avoiding Crowds: While it’s hard to find “crowds” in such a remote part of the world, if you prefer an “off-season” vibe, visiting during the shoulder months of April and November offers a perfect blend of good weather, quieter resorts, and a more intimate island experience—without the peak season prices.

If you’re wondering when to book this type of trip…

Planning ahead and planning early is key! Generally, booking 6 to 9 months in advance is ideal for the complex itineraries that French Polynesia often involves. We’ll need time to select the islands that best suit you and coordinate all the logistics! This timeline increases if you’re on the hunt for more unique stays (private island, anyone?!), private tours, and season-specific experiences.

Demand for bucket-list travel is rising ⬆️ , so don’t delay in securing your itinerary sooner
rather than later!

THE POPULAR ISLANDS | BORA BORA & BEYOND

Bora Bora: Often dubbed the “Jewel of the South Pacific,” Bora Bora offers unrivaled luxury and natural beauty. From your overwater bungalow, you can marvel at the towering Mount Otemanu and explore the vibrant lagoon. Take a boat tour, where you can snorkel with rays and sharks, or opt for a more romantic and less “shark-y” tour and enjoy a sunset cruise.

Moorea: For adventure, head to Moorea, just a short ferry ride from Tahiti. Explore lush Opunohu Valley on a scenic hike, visit the island’s famous pineapple plantations, and snorkel among vibrant marine life in the lagoons. Moorea also offers unique opportunities to experience Polynesian culture, whether through a traditional dance performance or a visit to local villages.

Huahine: For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, Huahine offers a quieter, authentic island escape. Discover the island’s rich history at its ancient marae (temples), visit Faie Village to see the sacred blue eyed eels, and enjoy the serenity of Avea Beach. Huahine’s lush jungles, secluded beaches, and unspoiled coral reefs make it a perfect destination for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty.

BOOK WITH AN ADVISOR | YOUR ISLAND MATCHMAKERS

P.S. Bookmark this tip and thank us later: don’t visit the islands of French Polynesia without
trying local dishes like poisson cru (Tahitian raw fish salad)!
