“We’re ready to book a trip.”
It’s one of the most common messages I receive.
Usually there’s already a destination in mind, a general budget range, and a few dates that might work on the calendar.
That’s a great starting point. But planning a truly memorable trip requires a bit more clarity before anything gets booked.
The truth is, choosing a destination and reserving flights is only the beginning. The most successful itineraries start with better questions.
These are the five questions I encourage clients to consider before booking a trip, because they shape everything that follows.
This is the question most travelers skip, yet it often matters the most.
Do you want the trip to feel relaxed and restorative?
Energized and adventurous?
Celebratory? Indulgent? Quiet?
If you don’t define the feeling first, it’s easy to default to what looks good online. Instagram itineraries tend to be packed with highlights, but that doesn’t always translate to a restful or meaningful travel experience.
When I design a trip for clients, we start with the overall mood they’re hoping to experience. Once that’s clear, the destination, pacing, and activities begin to fall naturally into place.
Trips almost always have a purpose, even if it isn’t immediately obvious.
Maybe it’s burnout recovery after a demanding season of work.
Maybe it’s a milestone birthday or anniversary.
Maybe it’s a long overdue opportunity to reconnect with a partner or family.
Sometimes clients tell me they simply “need to get away.” Even that is helpful.
Understanding the deeper reason behind a trip allows me to design an itinerary that actually supports it. The clearer you are about the purpose, the easier it becomes to create something meaningful.
Every trip has a category that matters most.
For some travelers it’s the hotel.
For others it’s the experiences, the dining, or the flights.
Deciding what matters most early in the planning process helps the budget work harder for you.
Instead of stretching resources thin across every category, we identify the experience that will define the trip and build around it.
Sometimes that means an extraordinary hotel with incredible views. Other times it means private guides, special access experiences, or unforgettable meals.
There’s no universal answer. The key is choosing intentionally.
Between travel days and your wishlist, is your timeline realistic?
This is where many itineraries begin to unravel. Travelers often try to fit too much into too few days, which leads to rushed experiences and unnecessary stress.
Think about the pace you truly want.
Do you prefer slow mornings and long dinners?
Or museums, tours, and full days of exploration?
There’s no right answer, but the itinerary should reflect your real energy level rather than an aspirational one.
A well-paced trip almost always becomes the most memorable one.
This question deserves honest clarity from the start.
Flights, transfers, excursions, dining, gratuities, and travel insurance all play a role in the final cost of a trip. When those elements aren’t considered early, it’s easy for the budget to shift quickly as plans come together.
Establishing a realistic budget upfront allows the itinerary to be designed thoughtfully rather than constantly adjusted later.
It also prevents the post-vacation sticker shock that can sometimes follow an incredible trip.
Great trips rarely begin with the question, “Where should we go?”
They begin with clarity.
You may notice that several of these questions appear in my inquiry form when clients reach out to begin planning. That’s intentional. The more insight I have into how you want to travel, the better I can design something that fits your life and your priorities.
Asking better questions almost always leads to better vacations.
If you’re beginning to think about your next trip, I’d love to help you design something thoughtful, seamless, and tailored entirely to you.
